"Hepworth turns up the tension in her latest Australian-set domestic suspense novel. A masterful depiction... makes this a winner for fans of Liane Moriarty and Megan Abbott" Booklist (starred review)Someone once told me that you have two families in your life - the one you are born into and the one you choose. Yes, you may get to choose your partner, but you don't choose your mother-in-law. The cackling mercenaries of fate determine it all.
From the moment Lucy met Diana, she was kept at arm's length. Diana was exquisitely polite, but Lucy knew, even after marrying Oliver, that they'd never have the closeness she'd been hoping for.
But who could fault Diana? She was a pillar of the community, an advocate for social justice, the matriarch of a loving family. Lucy had wanted so much to please her new mother-in-law.
That was ten years ago. Now, Diana has been found dead, leaving a suicide note. But the autopsy reveals evidence of suffocation. And everyone in the family is hiding something...
From the bestselling author of The Secrets of Midwives, with new novel The Good Sister out now.

Love this book
Loved the different perspectives explored, especially the mother in law and her daughter in law. Such a complex misunderstood relationship.

Brilliant Read!
This is the story of a family told from the perspective of Lucy and her mother in-law Diana, switching from the present to the past. Right from the beginning, when Lucy met Diana their relationship was strained. Even after Lucy marries Diana’s son Ollie their relationship does not improve. Lucy tries everything to appease Diana but nothing seems to work. What is more bewildering for Lucy is that her relationship with her father and sister-in law is strong so why can’t she connect with Diana? Diana is a well respected member with strong ties to her community and an advocate to her charity who lives a very comfortable rich life so why can’t she open up and accept Lucy and why is she so controlling and unwilling to assist her son and daughter financially when needed. Over the years Diana continues to keep Lucy at arms length. Even the birth of her and Ollies three children dose not soften her. Then Diana is diagnosed with breast cancer. Not long after, Diana is found dead believed to have committed suicide. But upon investigation it is revealed that Diana did not have breast cancer at all and she in fact was murdered by suffocation. But who would want Diana dead and why did she lie about her cancer diagnosis? We are then taken on a journey of Diana’s life and what events shaped her to the woman she became and how her actions formed the divide between her family. Is one of the members of her family responsible for her murder? WOW what a read! This is the first book I have read from Sally Hepworth and it definitely won’t be my last. It is a suspenseful thriller that had me hooked right from the start. I don’t very often read books from authors from my home country of Melbourne Australia so it was great reading about places like Toorak, Sorrento, the Morning Peninsula and yes even Dandenong! It was very well written with believable characters that I could completely resonate with and it kept me wanting more. A well crafted mystery which I highly recommend. I rate this book ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Subtle and Beautiful
I read this over the course of a day, beautifully written, so subtle for a murder mystery and really well developed characters. I would definitely recommend!
